If you lose access

What to do when the device you sign in with is gone, and what to do beforehand so it is not a crisis.

The device with your passkey on it is gone — lost, broken, stolen, or wiped by someone in IT who meant well. What now?

Getting back in

On the sign-in page, choose Can't sign in? and give the address you sign in with. ANVL emails you a link. Opening it lets you register a passkey on whatever device you are holding, and you are back.

The link works once and expires within the hour, so use it when you are at the device you mean to sign in from afterwards.

Anything still signed in elsewhere is signed out when you do this. That is the point: if the lost device is in somebody else's hands, this closes it.

Then tidy up

Once you are in with a new passkey, remove the one for the device you lost.

It has to be that order. ANVL will not let you remove your last passkey — and having a password does not change that — so the replacement has to exist first.

If the email never arrives

Check the spam folder, then write to hi@anvl.work from an address we can recognise and say what happened.

Doing it now instead

The five minutes that turn all of the above into a shrug:

Add a second passkey

On a different device from the first. A phone and a laptop, not two browsers on the same machine.

Or set a password

It does not depend on any particular device, which is exactly what you want from a fallback.

Name your passkeys

So that when you do have to remove one, you can tell which is which.

If a device is stolen rather than lost

Sign in on a device you still have. That alone signs the other one out, because ANVL keeps one session at a time. Then remove the stolen device's passkey.

Still stuck? Write to hi@anvl.work and tell us what you were trying to do.
