Changing your brand later

What follows a brand change automatically, what does not, and the two-minute check worth doing after a big one.

Nothing in the brand kit is locked in. Change any of it whenever you want.

Most of what you have made follows along on its own, because a presentation is not stored as a finished picture — it stores what is on it, and takes its colours and typefaces from the brand kit each time somebody opens it.

That is what you want almost all of the time. Fix a colour that was slightly wrong and your existing decks are right the next time they are opened, with nothing to go back and update.

What does not follow

Three things are written into a presentation when it is made, and stay as they were:

Text sizes

Change your type scale and existing slides keep the sizes they were built with.

Your tagline

The line that was current when the slide was made is the line it keeps.

Your logo

A slide points at the logo file it was given. Upload a new one and it becomes the logo on everything you make from then on — but a deck you already have keeps the old picture.

None of these has a repair button. If they matter on a particular deck, open it and change them there.

What to do after a change

Open the deck you show most often and look at it. Not all of them — the one that would embarrass you.

That single check catches the cases above, and it catches them while you have time to do something rather than five minutes before a meeting.

A file you have already exported never changes. A PDF or a PPTX is a copy, and if somebody has it, they have the brand as it was when you sent it. For something already out in the world, that is usually the right answer.

Undoing a change

The last ten changes to the brand are kept, each with who made it and when, and you can restore any of them.

Ten is a rolling window, and saving sections fills it faster than you would think. If something looks wrong after a round of edits, go back the same day rather than the following week.

Restoring is open to everyone who can edit the brand, not just admins. That is safe because restoring takes a snapshot of the current state first — so a restore can itself be undone.

Moving work to a different brand

If your workspace has more than one brand, a presentation can be moved to another one: Change brand, in the presentation's menu. It makes a copy on the new brand rather than converting the original, and the text is not rewritten — colours, typefaces and the tagline follow, and text sizes are recalculated onto the new brand's scale.

It is for moving between brands, not for refreshing a deck against its own brand. There is nothing to move to if you only have one.
